This is my box. I improvised a lot to get this done. I lost track of time and started a little late to do my assignment.
I used a die to use metal sheet without even knowing. Ceren suggested it but neither of us really thought it was an actual tool. That is why it has a very specific now puppy like form. I should’ve used a 2 by 4” wood material. The improvisation for this piece is deeply related to the fact that I started late but also that, because of that, the Shop was closed and I didn’t have any access to the large tools available. This is the piece of wood/die tool for my assignment. The following is a photo of the final design but also illustrates the original shape of the wood.
This one is made of plywood stacked to each other.
First I had to hand saw the material to create the lid. There was a tiny line between the plywood that looked easier to cut from. I took one of the handsaws and started cutting. At some point, it appeared like the material wasn’t giving in enough, so I used a more aggressive handsaw that would do the trick towards the end of the material until finally cutting it entirely.
Once the material was cut, I needed to make a hole in the middle. First I used a hole saw with one of the power drills. I managed to assemble the pieces to make a clean cut. However, I was not able to actually get the inside of the material off unless I cut all the way through, which was not the idea. At this point I was thinking on maybe do it with a chisel when Justin suddenly someone suggested to use the froster bits anyway. We tried it and then I was able to make a small hole inside. At this point I am thinking that I could actually keep some jewelry or something small inside. I’ll probably make a deeper whole later on. This helped me to speed up the process.
Later on, I sanded the pieces so they feel smooth. I wasn’t able to use the big sander, being the reason why I used the handheld ones that did the job. The material was smoother too from the beginning which helped as well. At this point the piece already looked finished and I just needed to use one of the default holes to make the lid open and close with a large screw I had to pick and screw.
Finally, my puppy jewelry box came to life and I was able to take a couple of nicer photos to it.
