Build 5 equal elements
I wanted to make an irregular shape so I started imagining and then sketching. I wanted to have something curved and have the possibility to be assembled in some way. I came with this idea after trying to come up with very geometrical shapes that could merge together. However I had a hard time coming with an idea like that this time. Because of this, I thought of a droplet kind of shape.
After this, I kept thinking on how to make it more interesting so I started looking for some inspiration on the internet. After navigating through many artisan crafting profiles, I found the following video on Instagram.

After seeing this I thought that it would be really amazing to make a lamp! I had this thought on the first semester about creating a lamp for myself at some point. Although he used a very special/raw piece of wood to create the shape, I thought I could make my sketch pieces kinda work to create something similar. However, the idea of creating something functional and that uses light inspired me. So I updated my sketch, adding the skeleton of the lamp and the respective holes where the lamp and the wiring would go.
I also redesigned the base a little bit and thought about the cavities for wiring the lightbulb.
For this part, I asked Aram for his help on giving me some advice on how to think this part of the design through. He showed me how to draw it and what to consider. Definitely he did a better draw than I did. However, I did my very best.
Once I got these sketches that gave me some more clarity on how to design this, I started fabricating. I was not sure about the measurements of every section and I calculated on the fly. Which in some way helped but not at the same time. I realized that probably measuring further would have helped me on getting more exact dimensions for later cuts and holes.
I started by drawing my shape on a piece of wood and cutting it to the shape to get the first installment of 5. Once I cut it, I sanded it so it’s easier to build the following ones following the first’s final shape.
When I finishes the first installment of five, I started wondering what tool could I make to create the rest of them. Because the shape was absolutely random, I understood that maybe my first installment was the very best tool I could do. Following also what we learned in class and inspired with what Phil taught us on it, I proceeded to cut the rest of these by stacking them and following the shape closely with the blade.
Once cut, the pieces looked like this! Time to sander them to get them even more in similar shape.
