Design for Free Play

She’s agnostic? what is that? Curiosity or goal that comes from collaborator or character.

Crafting design brief comes from research. There will be always different iterations on how to pursue the idea. Decision making is extremely relevant for design. It is hard to choose or make decision. She will focus on that when showing her work. Helpful to realize you just have to pick one.

FreePlay: play that is freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated.

Extrinsic vs intrinsic: grades or rise or things to get out of room vs just inner curiosity, impact or for the sake of making something cool.

Queens museum —> contemporary art. Expanding into a children’s museum. Usually art in museums is untouchable and for them is a space of no fun. However, they want to add the play part to it to invite children to engage with art.

Tracks of play is a concept she developed for children to draw in the floor. She gave some weird big scaled markers for them to play and experiment. This experiment is collaborative. They roll up and down, make marks and collaborate. They couldn’t tell who’s traces were who’s. Also to remove the tight ownership of art for them. Exhibit is called Prototyping Play. It was fun. They basically play tested.

In the other half, gross motor play for children to roll, move and so on.

In 2009, High Line Park in NYC. It has 3 faces. How can it engage family, parents and their kids. Open ending questions is great for design. Kids could design something. She would ask about their project to understand what the kids thought. Collaborative. The pieces where bigger for a child to use. Usually they say that design should be easy. In this case, easy is boring. They would have to figure it out. His invention is used in classrooms and schools. When kids build with their hands they can communicate with play in ways that they cannot communicate with words. Some kids where very comfortable without instructions. Some other’s needed that, these kids basically made a crane with the find a way to lift the bucket instructions. This project is called the Rigamajig.

2020 now. Liberty Science Center (Wobbly World) 8000 visitor’s a day?? Toddlers 18 months to 2 or 3 years. ALL IS INTERCONNECTED. What other’s do impact what is happening to me. Cool to have the concept for them to be comfortable with. When sketching always keep something to reference scale.

Senda de Vida Playpark 2025 Reynosa, Mexico. They cleared a garbage dump of this community that lives just across the Rio Bravo River on the border. There were engineers. They used some of the materials available from the community. Once they establish the park, they tried to get green trees and plant them. That is ongoing and has been pretty amazing! Very interesting.
