Typography

Black Lives Matter movement.

Typeface vs Font

Typeface is an overall design or style. Font is a specific version or variation of a typeface, defined by attributes like, size and weight.

serifs vs san serifs

Serif are more classical, old style. Garamond (used for books and some brands), Baskerville (modern, sophisticated, used for brands too), Rockwell (slab seriff, brands). San serifs are more geometric and grotesque. Helvetica (simple, square quality, is everywhere, sings, NewYork Subway, ads, brands, etc), Franklin Gothic (maybe friendlier and unique, brands), Monserrat (Gotham) (friendliest and cuddliest, open and wide, geometric, google, resume font, politic ads, tv and ads. Monospace (digital flavor).

Use references like fontsinuse.com, fontinlogo. Find pairings when redesigning. Why to combine to typefaces. There’s logic behind combination. Check slides. Look for contrast. Monotype website to generate pairs. also google font pairings.

All of these decisions come into play when projection mapping, animating or designing. You have to consider the output system as to where people will actually read your content.

Check the videos in the slides. So much joyful inspiration with letter forms.

Check the assignment for next week. Check Yuliya’s notes about your menu design that you have to finish.
